Very good overview of the years films and your feelings about them, but you still have millennial voice fry….. sorry dude.
Agree with the #1 pick, that movie was refreshingly original. Need to see Tar but refuse to see Avatar(just not a fan of teenage dramas).
SPOILER ALERT!!! AVATAR The Way of the Water;
was impressive visually and cinematography speaking, by far one of the most impressive practical and visual effects. But I really think the story was way worse than I expected.
The dialogs… so cringy, every aspect of the movie is predictable and so cliché, the most superficial bully with 0 character development, the poor undeveloped romance just to bring a part 3, the way they didn't pay almost any attention to the Tuktirey's (daughter) connection with Eywa (again to make a 3rd movie), specially frustrating given that the mother of the water tribe realized that she had something special and decided to do nothing. The forced family ending with the other tribe leaving with no reason, and predictable death because of the lack of character development of the older brother. 0 espiritual growth from Jake in the whole time he's been in pandora, but in Avatar 1 they showed how much he adapted and grew, in this movie he was just a militar father with a stereotypical family with the irrelevant kid, the "weird sister", the "misfit" brother that wants father attention because it's only given to the older and heir brother. Rituals felt so shallow. Neitiry (mother) didn't felt that connected to Eiwa or their custom anymore, also had a cliché and sexist "woman" rivalry with the other mother of the water tribe with the men being the calm and reasonable. I didn't felt that Neitiry and Jake cared for each other in any scene.
Most interesting stuff that needed more attention, Spider's character, and Tulkun, this last one had a nice touch to the movie but when they killed the mother was 0 ceremonial as when they kill an avatar, but they said they were like brothers and sisters.
The revenge and wanting to kill Jake was the poorest and most unreasonable plot they could've thought about, it had no other reason than a cheap revenge with the excuse of "pacifying" the avatars but was the worst thing of the movie, never felt any real anger or reason for revenge, it was much better developed the Tulkun killing for a million dolars life elixir (but almost the same as the previous movie).
Editing because I forgot about the antagonist
Finally, sound design was really good but soundtrack wasn't quite there.
Overall, I think for 10 years of waiting they could've had a much much better story and dialogs, character development and little less sexism lol. They focused so much on visuals that they forgot on story. also WTF with The Weeknd at the end.
This is completely my opinion and I respect and would love to hear what you guys think.
I'm only on your number 9 on the list… subscribed!
Everything everywhere was easily my movie of the year, lots of good stuff though
a lot of these movies were already on my watchlist but i always need someone who has a similar love of art/media to just show me that tiny little thing that tells me i NEED to watch something not just let it collect dust in my letterboxd lmaoooo like i wanted to watch triangle of sadness and the northman but now i HAVE to
and EEAAO I've seen six times already and this video just told me to watch it AGAIN after reading the daniels' article about the film so i can KEEP FINDING NEW STUFF there's so much in that fucking movie i stg if you haven't seen it yet you are seriously missing out and that's coming from someone who HATES when people say that.. its the easiest way to get me to not want to watch something because… wtf do you know about me? jokes aside, everything everywhere all at once is seriously a movie everyone can and should watch. seriously

the worst person in the world was really eye-opening for me in terms of what a movie can rise in me emotionally and i’d love recommendations for anything like it. There’s a swedish filmmaker that released a couple as well that similarly resonated though the title(s) slip my mind at the moment.
Sad year for movies. The industry is dying a slow death.
My favorite of 2022 is Eo directed by Jerzy Skolimowski, a Polish film Inspired by Robert Bresson's Au Hasard Balthazar.
Lmao, Nope was BAD. It's amazing I keep seeing any positive reviews on it at all, I'm actually shocked.

Interesting review. Storyline/screenplay I view as #1, acting #2, visually #3, music score & synced to movie movement #4.
TY for the mentions of After Yang and White Noise I will watch for those. I went to the theater to see Banshees because I agree the landscape is so much a part of this film. I hope that Kerry Condon's performance will be nom'd for more awards. I still feel 3 Billboards is Martin McDonagh's. When I saw that The Fabelmans and Green Onion were nom'd for a Golden Globe I thought this must have been a very weak year. I thought that film suffered from Spielberg's usual flaws and it was not a fav for me. I found Green Onions to be boring and I liked Knives. I like Todd Field's previous movies but I am still undecided on Tar. I plan to watch again. I DNF'd Everywhere. I just could never connect with it. After your review here I will try again.
In future, it would be really helpful if you would please include a list of the movie titles so we can look them up. Thanks.
Loved the list, also please watch Burning Days by Emin Alper. It was a really good film and I think you can (or at least be will able to soon) find the film on MUBI. The Turkish government is trying to hurt the spread of the film by supressing it and not nominating it for the Academt selection but i think it really needs some international recognition. It was selected for Cannes’s un certain regard too
