Viewer Question:
Aaron G – Hey guys! Did you see that Knives Out 2 became the 3rd biggest movie debut on Netflix in history? How much of this success do you think is due to the fact that it had a theatrical release instead of just being dropped on Netflix. I personally don’t think it would have had nearly as big of an audience. What say you? Thanks.

Lol no way the theater release matter.
It hardly played anywhere
Still haven’t seen this or knives out.
I loved Glass Onion. One of my favorite movies from 2022.
I really hope this gets a 4K Blu-Ray release.
I really don't think the movie getting a theatrical release was important
Movie was great, really funny
I hated the film boring
Glad I saw it in a theater.
Glass onion made 15 million, it is a massive failure because of what Netflix did, they would have made much more money if they released trailers released it in theaters for a month then released it on Netflix, knives out is extremely popular and this movie broke records on its name alone.
I talked to hundreds of people irl and tons of people on apps like Facebook and Likewise that didn't even know it was in theaters. This was a know ip that everyone knew, and just like Wednesday, tons of word of mouth. But sure, Netflix did make tons of extra money by putting it in theaters, but it didn't make it a success on Netflix because of it. Also, even though Knives Out didn't make a boat load of money in theaters, that was 3 years ago. People have been seeing that movie for years now on cable and streaming. Glass Onion was sure to be massively successful because of that.
John is very wrong here. Knives out made 300 million dollars + sure, but it sold millions of bluray and dvds, it did well on streaming, digital and tiktok/twitter talks abt the movie all the time. People watch it later . Glass onion was very much anticipated . Neither red notice or dont look up released in theatres and those still did better. If glass onion hadnt released in theatres it would still have done what it did just because it was a knives out sequel alone
Didn't Netflix pay 450 million dollars for two sequels? How are those "little movies"?
I didn't like the sequel that much. Janelle Monae's storyline sucked.
Rebel Moon needs a theatrical release too.
While I know how experienced you all are on the film industry, this is another example of John's opinion becoming an apparent "fact" without him sharing with us exactly how he "knows" it to be true.
The original had both theatrical and streaming to gather fans. Was watched by so many people, multiple times as far as everyone I know having seen it. Its also been out since 2019. Grey Man doesn't compare for the same reason Rob referenced. A murder thriller was appealing to me, my wife, my brother-in-laws, my sister-in-laws, some of their (old enough) kids and our parents. I cannot say this about many films. It has a bigger cast of excellent actors that draw in a range of people, not everyone was interested for just Danial Craig. It also released during the xmas period where more people were off and had the time to dedicate to Glass Onion (naturally people watch more at Christmas than any other time of the year).
So when you take into account the reputation, the fact its a sequel, the fact its "free" to many of us who already have Netflix, and the xmas break, how can you be certain its theatrical release had a significant impact on its views on Netflix? John, your arguments for why the theatrical was a big impact were mostly coincidental. I can certainly see the theatrical release bringing more attention, and it certainly brought in more money, but how much you can equate to Netflix success is something you can't possible quantify (without more evidence).
lmao the theatrical strategy didn't do anything. knives out was already a famous film. it's wrong to use it as an example.
netflix should release an original non-franchise film in theatres and then let's see the performance
I find it funny that John is calling this movie as a 'little murder mystery'. Its a multi starrer sequel to a beloved movie. It isn't a small, unknown movie by any notice. He's trying to argue that 300 million is not that great, when 300 million is fantastic for any non mega franchise film. And talking about stars, Craig has literally been one of the most popular Bonds ever. He's a bigger star than say Ryan Gosling.
Or… go with me now… it’s a sequel to a very popular first film with the same star, writer, and director.
I agree with Kris in terms of leaving money on the table. Every cent of that should be important to pumping it back into the system. And what better way to attract new subscribers than putting something in theaters to a mass audience who might just not know what stuff a stream can provide. Grey man definitely would have be more productive to netflix being both in theaters and on the platform later, they can keep shows the way they are, but movies are a great chance to get some of that funding back and reach out to new customers.
I wanted to see it in theaters but the limited window didn't give me a huge chance so I had to wait longer for the Netflix release. A week isn't a ton of time especially it being only certain theaters.
I think if Glass Orion A Knives Out Mystery would have gotten a proper release I think the movie’s worldwide box office would have been around somewhere in the 400 million dollar mark.
